I am a self-taught textile artist. My love affair with material began when I was a child of five or six. I would spend much of my playtime creating outfits for my dolls using my mother’s scarves or any other scraps of material I could find. As I got older I taught myself to sew on my mother's old Singer machine, and dabbled in making simple dresses for myself. It wasn’t until about ten years ago that I caught the quilting bug. By far it is my single most gratifying creative outlet. In 2008, when president Obama was elected into office, I was struck by the significance of what had just happened. An African-American man was now president of the same United States that enslaved African Americans just a few hundred years before. I had to express the enormity of my feelings. I ended up creating my first story quilt "Full Circle, A History". Since that time I have created a few other art quilts and they all have their own story. Each of my quilts seem to have been created through me, rather than by me. I truly feel a deep connection with my ancestors during the creative process. Quilting has been a part of the African American culture for hundreds of years. My art quilts have been exhibited at the African American Museum in Hempstead NY, as well as several other venues throughout Long Island. Recently, I was honored to have an extended exhibit of my work at the SNUUC South gallery during Black History Month. I was the featured artist in Newsday’s LI Life section, and on News Channel 12 in February 2019. I truly feel a deep connection with my artistic spirit during the creative process. Quilting is an amazing art form with such a rich history. I am thrilled to be a part of this incredible journey and to spread my wings in the areas of art and design.

My Background
I am in love with fabric! I use beautifully colored cottons mostly, but love the idea of quilting with silk and linen for future projects. I have embellished my quilts with paint, gems, sequins and other materials. I love playing with color, design and placement. I am excited by texture, depth and movement in my pieces.

Every quilt has its own story. I feel so connected to each of them. I usually begin with a very broad, general idea of what I want to create, but I never know what will evolve and I am always surprised by the finished quilt. Music plays a significant role in my creative process. I usually choose music that will put me in the mood of the piece. It inspires me and helps me to connect with it.
